With COVID-19 cases decreasing rapidly in response to the widespread vaccination efforts, states have begun to end these emergency declarations. By declaring a state of emergency, governors gained new powers and flexibility to react to the quickly changing environment as well as tap into federal resources. The map below, updated daily, illustrates how states are currently mandating wearing masks.ĬOVID-19 Statewide Emergency DeclarationsĪt the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, all 50 governors declared a statewide state of emergency. Currently, the key variable for state mask requirements is whether vaccinated individuals are included in the requirements. With that in mind, political leaders have made the tough decision to require residents to wear masks or facial coverings. States realize that convincing more residents to wear masks is one way to help slow the spread of the COVID-19 without resorting to shuttering the economy.
